Commercial Refrigeration Repair

Proper refrigeration is mission-critical to your business. When you don’t have proper refrigeration, it can mean lost business and wasted perishable foods. When keeping cool is an important part of your business, it’s an important part of ours too. At RG Mechanical, we offer commercial refrigeration repair and installation of all commercial refrigeration appliances including ice machines, walk-in coolers and freezers, reach-in freezers or coolers, and cold and hot bars.

Common Refrigeration Repairs

When your commercial refrigeration isn’t working properly, it costs you money by the minute. Therefore, we service all commercial refrigeration repairs including the following:

Refrigerator Cleaning — Huntingburg, IN — RG Mechanical Contracting LLC
  • Leaking Water: Oftentimes this is due to a clogged drain hose or a defrost drain opening. Sometimes it’s a simple gasket around the door. Either way, we come ready to get the water stopped and the unit working right away.
  • Fluid In Fresh Food Compartments: Any type of standing fluid can cause major hazards. Sometimes this occurs when the door seal is damaged or old and the temperature inside rises.
  • Excessive Frost: Your freezer should remain at adequate temperature without excessive frost. Too much frost in the freezer usually means your evaporator fan motor needs to be replaced.
  • Cooler Stopped Running: If the cooler just shuts down completely, this can be catastrophic for your business. The first step is to check the thermostat and then give RG Mechanical a call for a quick commercial refrigeration repair.
  • Cooler Isn’t Cooling Properly: Sometimes your cooler is cool, but not cold enough – or it has a hard time recovering after it’s been opened. This may be due to a compressor motor, a door seal, or a worn-out fan. The only way to know for sure is to call for a commercial refrigeration repair.
  • Cooler Making Strange Noises: You don’t ever want to hear loud or strange sounds from the cooler. A cooler that is banging, clanking, or wheezing needs the help of a commercial refrigeration repair ASAP.

Refrigeration Maintenance & Cleaning

To keep your refrigeration equipment working at its best, it needs periodic cleaning and inspection. When you maintain your commercial equipment, you can spot parts that need to be replaced before they fail, and notice issues that could cause breakdowns later. Regular maintenance is also important to keep you in compliance with Indiana food safety regulations and to keep energy bills down. To keep your equipment in tip-top shape, there are also some easy maintenance things you and your staff can do before you call for a commercial refrigeration repair.

  • Clean Your Equipment: A fast-paced kitchen lends itself to frequent spills and little time for cleanup. Anytime you have a drip or spill around your commercial refrigerator, it can lead to unpleasant odors, mold growth, and affect the quality of your ingredients. Always clean up spills promptly and avoid using harsh chemicals.
  • Ensure the Right Settings: If you set the temperature of your cooler too low, your system will be overworked quickly. If it’s too warm, your food can spoil. Set the thermostat correctly and double-check with a thermometer for accuracy.
  • Defrost on Schedule: It’s important to defrost your cooler as recommended but defrosting too often can create unnecessary work for your unit.
  • Don’t Overcrowd Contents: Make sure that nothing is crammed in the cooler like sardines (even the sardines need a little room). The air in the cooler must be able to freely circulate around the contents to easily maintain its temperature.
  • Clear the Area to Maximize Airflow: Don’t pile boxes outside the cooler, keep the space clear so you don’t block the intake and exhaust vents.
  • Inspect Seals and Fix Leaks: Some minor seal problems can be addressed in-house with a little silicone caulk, but anything beyond that needs to be handled by a commercial refrigeration repair.
  • Check Interior Lights: Remember to shut off the lights at the end of the day. Lights generate heat, which is one of the most common reasons why refrigeration units are working harder than necessary.

Maintaining your commercial refrigeration systems on a regular basis is an important part of overall maintenance. Once a year, it’s time to call in a professional commercial refrigeration repair to check out the inner workings of each cooler, freezer, and ice machine to ensure you don’t have a ticking time bomb in your kitchen. Here are the things we complete during a thorough commercial refrigeration repair visit:

  • Clean Ice Machines
  • Check Refrigerant Levels
  • Observe the Motor Operation
  • Examine All Parts for Wear & Tear Before a Minor Problem Becomes a Big Problem
  • Check Suction Line Insulation
  • Clean Drain Lines
  • Inspect Compressor Operation
  • Check Electrical Connections
  • Test Thermometers & Recalibrate If Necessary

Frequently Asked Refrigeration Questions

  • Do I need a floor in the walk-in cooler/freezer?

If you’re installing a new walk-in cooler/freezer, we recommend you have some type of insulation barrier under the walls of the unit to reduce condensation on high humidity days. It can be installed on concrete floors, but an insulated concrete floor with an insulation barrier is required. It’s also important to check with local codes for your area.

  • Where is the best place to install my ice machine?

The best place to install an ice machine is in an area with temperature control and plenty of ventilation. That means it needs to be indoors and in an open area. Closets, cubbies, hot kitchens, decks, or porches are not ideal places for an ice machine.

  • Can I build my own walk-in cooler or freezer?

There’s a good chance you can find a YouTube tutorial on just about anything, including building your own walk-in fridge. It may seem like a good way to save money, but we do not recommend it. If you have never installed a walk-in fridge, it’s no walk in the park and if you do not install it up to your local health departments required codes, you’ll have to pay a professional to re-do it anyway. Save yourself the time and the trouble and have a professional install your walk-in so you know it’s done right the first time.

  • What temperature should I set my walk-in cooler/freezer to?

The FDA mandates that food be kept at or below 41°F, though the optimum point is around 38°F. Anywhere above that, and the food won’t last as long as it should, and you may even face legal issues. Because freezing temperature is 32 degrees, we recommend a walk-in refrigerator be maintained at between 35-38 degrees and a freezer be run at -10 – 0.
